 INTRODUCTION

The BERZERKER, monster mesin death metal industrial Australia kembali memborbardir lewat album kelimanya, "The Reawakening" yang dirilis tepat 1 September kemarin. Salah satu band yang pernah dibesarkan label metal dunia EARACHE Records, kini memutuskan berdiri di bawah bendera sendiri BERZERKER INDUSTRIES. Uniknya lagi, album barunya itu HANYA dijual langsung (via order) pada pembeli tanpa melalui distribusi toko-toko cd. No MiddleMan bullshit involved! Woho... So, simak wawancara Jurnallica dengan penggaruk gitarnya, Ed Lacey. (Sori nih coy, masih written in bule ).

 BIOGRAPHY

The Berzerker is an extreme metal band from Melbourne, Australia. The band's music, heavily influenced by older death metal and grindcore, can be characterized as a fusion of death metal, industrial, and speedcore with a touch of gabba techno. The band's founding member Luke Kenny describes the band's style as industrial death metal.
The Berzerker has so far released five full length albums, The Berzerker (2000), Dissimulate (2002), World of Lies (2005), Animosity (2007) and The Reawakening (2008). These were all released through Earache Records, with the exception of the latest album, which was released through Berserker Industries. During the early part of their career as a live act, band members were identified only as The Vocalist, The Guitarist, The Bassist and The Drummer, distinguishable on stage only by the intricate monster masks they wore. However, the group has since abandoned this device.
A DVD documentary, The Principles and Practices of The Berzerker (2004), includes several hours of live concert footage, as well as the first public images of the band members without their monster masks. Most of the band's music videos have been banned from broadcast for reasons such as the possible epileptic fit-inducing imagery contained in the video "Forever", and the horrific imagery of "Reality". The latter features graphic images of cadavers and body parts, along with appearances from the band themselves. [www.wikipedia.com]

INTERVIEW with Ed Lacey (ED)

1) Seemly your band are so productive making new stuff. So, whats to be proud of new release or the selling points?

ED: There is much to be proud of with this new release “The Reawakening”. This album demonstrates a shift back to some of the original sounds and approaches taken by the band on our first release, whilst still being able to explore new territory with shredding guitars and blistering speeds that leaves everyone in the dirt.

2) The interest thing that we want to know is your new marketing. You sell directly to all customers without intermediaries. So, whats wrong behind this all? Isn’t makes you more harder in distributing the album? And how about “income” when you uses this new marketing?

ED: Thats right, we are no longer with Earache Records. We have our own label called BERZERKER INDUSTRIES and have taken the reigns towards putting out heavy industrial death metal to the masses without any middle man. If you want to have your copy of The Reawakening you must order it ONLINE only and we sent it DIRECTLY to the consumer. We are back to the days of bands and fans connecting and supporting each other.

It is harder in the sense that much of the ground work and distribution costs must be covered by our label initially, however, once the ball starts to roll - and crush - the band will see the financial support it derserves which if on a label it would not see, and the fans not only have the satisfaction of having a disc that will make their ears bleed and drive their grandparents to their graves BUT also they will know that by buying the album they are supporting the band directly.

3) Why you left from EARACHE Records and builds new label BERZERKER INDUSTRIES. Are this label will uses for next The Berzerker releases in future? And why you choose “industries” for the label. Are you also releasing another bands stuff?

ED: We left Earache due to differences of approach and thinking, and we want to actually make something back from this as it has been over 10 years for this band now!!! It is not just Earache, its the industry machine in general! This is why we have started Berzerker Industries and have decided on this new approach. The way we see it is that the industry is starting to head this way, and more and more bands are beginning to distribute their own product to their fans. The label will not be closed to any ideas of taking on other acts in the future at some point.

4) Usually, many bands offering their materials to labels and let them producing. And when you get good promotion, you will get many tours. So, are you get money enough when you doing all metal/grindcore things, or maybe its just another game?

ED: At the moment our label is not in a financial position to fund massive tours. But we are working on touring a lot more, and hitting places we haven’t been yet...Asia, South America, etc.

5) What do you think about myspace or other online networks? Are you use it as alternative links in promotion? Or this way you promoting your stuff to your fans, medias, etc?

ED: Social networks such as myspace are great for promotion. We use it as much as we can. It's just another avenue for bands to get their product out there without having to bend over and be fucked. It’s a great way for people to get in touch with us directly as well.

6) Do you think need an image for metal band? We know in past times The Berzerker used beast masks, and I thought that’s cool. But now you lose it all... Or maybe you just wanna looked more real?

ED: The image is very important, but we got way too many comparisons to another band, which I did not like.

7) We always saw The Berzerker’s cd covers uses same kind of Dragon artworks. Any meaning of this dragon symbol?

ED: The Iron Dragon was based on the Tibetan solar/lunar calendar, they year 2000 it happen to be the year of the Iron Dragon... We thought it was quite fitting. The new album cover does have the dragon breaking free. This seemed like a perfect way to portray us considering the title of the album.

8) I saw the band like The Berzerker have “own” concepts. So what do you think when peoples said this band is just “one-man project” or like something else?

ED: I try not to think anything about what people say. I read a recent review in a magazine that really taught me not to give much of a fuck about what anyone says about this band. We have a basic song writing core in this band. The new album was myself and Luke. Albums in the past have been a combination of Jason, Sam, Adrian, myself and Luke. I guess I say to anyone who calls it a one man project to go and read the album sleeves.

9) Basically, what the topics that you poured in Berzerker lyrics?

ED: I am not the lyric writer in the band, this is all Luke. He writes about many topics however my take on it is that his lyrics are an attack on the human race in general. Dissapointments, observations and angry fucking accusations. It's all good. As humans we have the capability to do so much but we do not.

Instead we decieve, lie, murder and destroy all hope. It is in our nature, but does that mean we accept it? Well...make your own mind up on that one. I’m sure Luke's answer to this would be something similar. So, put on the album, open up the sleeve and read away.

10) We know death metal/grindcore scene more dominated in USA/Europe –whereas you all from Australian. What your views about every each scene in this world? And how you will dominate around the world?

ED: The way to gain attention around the world is not only to get the product out there but also to TOUR, TOUR, TOUR. The more shows and festivals we can play the better this becomes. We just played on the Brutal Assault festival in Czech Republic 2008 and the amount of publicity and promotional opportunities were amazing. Festivals all the way!!!

11) Did you have heard about Indonesian Underground scene and our local bands? If we see on the map, of course your country is very close with us. But do you have plan to go to Indonesia?

ED: We are keen play everywhere...so yes absolutely. We are not aware of your underground scene but are very keen to come over and inflict it with brutal grind assault. If you know any bookers please get them to contact Luke directly (lukeberzerker@gmail.com)

12) Ok Ed, thank for answers. Any want to add…

ED: Hope to see you crazy fuckers on the road!!!
